Social Impact



Jeff and Rohit jointly direct ThoughtWorks’ commercial practice to support non-profits, NGOs, government, and other mission-driven organizations. Projects to date include work for UNICEF Uganda, UNICEF Iraq, and the Grameen Foundation Mifos project. Additionally, they develop and manage ThoughtWorks’ pro-bono social impact programs. Since 2009, these programs have contributed expertise and code to a wide range of Open Source (OSS) and Information and Computing Technology for Development (ICT4D) projects including: OpenMRS, Grameen Mobile Technology for Community Health, RapidFTR, and RapidSMS.

Jeff Wishnie

Jeff joined ThoughtWorks in the fall of 2009, as Director of Social Impact. Prior to this, he spent nearly 20 years as a silicon valley entrepreneur working in both large organizations and small - as engineer, user-interface designer, product designer, architect, president and founder. In 2006, Jeff turned his focus to the use of technology for social good - taking on the role of CTO for Inveneo, a San Francisco based non-profit in the ICT4D field.

Responsible for software projects including the Ubuntu-based Inveneo Desktop Linux, he also planned and participated in field implementation of computing and communications technology for education, health care, relief, and economic development projects in Uganda, Rwanda, Mozambique, and Sierra Leone. Clients during this period include the UN High Commissioner on Refugees, the World Health Organization, WorldVision International, ES Global, Microsoft, Cisco, and the BOSCO Uganda project.

Away from his professional life, Jeff flies paragliders competitively and is currently ranked in the top 100 in the world.


Rohit Bansal

Rohit joined ThoughtWorks in 1999 in Chicago - spent a couple of years working in with Bay Area start-ups in the Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) space - and then he returned to India to setup ThoughtWorks first office there, based in Bangalore. Over the past 10 years, he has played multiple roles in software delivery, client management and business operations - at each step nurturing and growing the India organization, building ThoughtWorks India into a key strategic entity within the global organization. In his current role as Director of Social Impact, Rohit is responsible for bringing ThoughtWorks' technological expertise to organizations with a humanitarian mission.

Outside work, Rohit is actively involved in building local community support for action pertaining to environmental issues.
