Increasing virtualization and separation between development and operations makes this worse. In stark contrast some teams are writing code that leverages mechanical sympathy to get incredibly high performance from their software. The LMAX Disruptor is an open-source example in Java. For high performance cases like finance and Big data, getting closer to the metal can yield big returns.
