As token costs have risen and the industry has left the tokenmaxxing fad behind, developers are looking for ways to manage token usage. The old advice that you should always measure before optimizing still applies. Context profiling means analyzing where your token spend is going (for example, are tokens being spent on file reads or MCP tool calls?). Intuition is a poor guide to identifying which optimizations are worthwhile, especially when you factor in caching, model tiers and promotional pricing. Mature tooling hasn't yet emerged, but you can make do by analyzing your agent sessions or data from tools such as Entire CLI and AgentsView.
In our experience, the biggest savings often come from simple changes, such as clearing sessions at the right time, tuning cache parameters or quietening chatty build scripts. Yet we often see developers reaching for complex solutions such as compression proxies without measuring their impact.
