Taking Action to Fix Healthcare: Digital Solutions for Macro Issues

Dorothy is a 70-year-old woman with dementia living in the U.K. Despite receiving 30 hours of in-home care per week through the government-funded National Health Service, Dorothy was being admitted to the hospital multiple times each month. So Dorothy and her home are now fitted with sensors to monitor her vitals and specific behaviors. The data collected, un-obtrusively from these sensors, help Dorothy’s care team identify the patterns of behavior that were leading to these frequent hospital visits. Now, Dorothy is doing much better, requiring fewer hours of in-home care and zero hospital visits. Armed with better data and insights, her caregivers and family are empowered to make more fact-based decisions concerning Dorothy’s care. Dorothy is doing much better, her family is too, and in all, there is a reduction of burden on a creaking U.K. Health Service.

A scene from Healthcare Of the Future? Not quite. This is a true story shared by Lucie Glenday, founder, and CEO of Mysense.ai, an in-home health analytics startup.

Healthcare Goes Home

In many countries, healthcare is a tangled web financial, bureaucratic, social issues. Eldercare may be one of the most complex; as the population ages and lifespan increases, more pressure is being placed on healthcare systems, providers, patients, and families. It’s no wonder that demand for home health care services is rising owing to benefits such as improved patient outcome, long-term care, cost efficiency, elimination of unnecessary hospitalization, and patient preferred settings. The global home healthcare market size is anticipated to reach USD 517.23 billion by 2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research.

One key player in this exciting space is Mysense.ai. Founder and CEO Lucie Glenday launched Mysense.ai to bring the power of IoT and analytics to those with chronic and debilitating conditions, and those who care for them.

A digital-first U.K. start-up, Mysense.ai uses emerging technology to better understand, predict, and ultimately preempt the acute health care needs of both the elderly and people living with chronic conditions. With a longer-term view, providing data to help future generations lead healthier lives through prevention. Lucie describes Mysense.ai as “a health analytics company that collects data and provides information to families, caregivers, and healthcare providers.” She is careful to point out that they are not a device manufacturer.

From Attorney to AI Innovator

Lucie never imagined she would be at the forefront of healthcare innovation: “I was on track to become a barrister in London when I realized there was so much administrative work involved!” explained Lucie.

After several years in global management consulting—where she discovered her passion for enterprise data management and digital infrastructure—Lucie was asked to lead a massive government digital transformation program designed to organize and provide better access to government services information.

After leaving Government Digital Services, Lucie decided to apply her expertise in digital transformations to work for city and county governments. There, she helped lead a pilot program at a residential care facility for patients with dementia. Lucie explains, “We monitored the patients general behavior and vitals using simple sensors. In just one month we saw significant patterns and could infer correlations between certain behaviors and changes in well-being.”

The success of this program lit a spark in Lucie, one that would keep her awake at night. A startup was born.

Scale at Startup Speed

Like any true startup entrepreneur, Lucie recalls “hacking a lot of off-the-shelf technologies, calling in favors from family and friends, and even using my own poorly written code.” She surrounded herself with a passionate, talented, and personally invested team—many of whom have had the responsibility of providing long-term care for a loved one.

Today, MySense.ai is a simple-to-use health analytics platform. It monitors patient health, well-being and behavior patterns, establishes a baseline for what ‘being well’ looks like and flags subtle changes, providing peace of mind for them, their family, and caregivers.

Of course, there have been setbacks and naysayers: “People said we were wrong to try to solve hardware, machine learning, and user experience all in one go. Typically a business only focuses on one area. But this integration is critical; we were able to get hardware and software development cycles in sync, which was a big breakthrough.” But for the most part, says Lucie, “things have gone a bit mad in a very good way!”

MySense is very quickly on its way to helping families in more than 100,000 homes in the U.K., with several thousand more planned in Thailand, Turkey and soon, Canada.

In October, Lucie will share how Mysense.ai is moving quickly to scale up and across the globe including:

  • How Mysense.ai is navigating the complex healthcare ecosystem including both the public and private sector
  • Her unique take on consumer data ownership, privacy, and the role companies have to protect that data
  • How they select the right distribution, retail, and manufacturing partners
  • How they hire and retain the talent they need today and to get where they need to be tomorrow
