About the talks

Martin Fowler

Software design in the 21st century

Martin Fowler, Chief Scientist at ThoughtWorks

In the last decade or so, we've seen a number of new ideas added to the mix to help us effectively design our software. Patterns help us capture the solutions and rationale for using them. Refactoring allows us to alter the design of a system after the code is written. Agile methods, in particular Extreme Programming, give us a highly iterative and evolutionary approach which is particularly well suited to changing requirements and environments. Martin Fowler has been a leading voice in these techniques and will talk about his recent thinking about how these and other developments affect our software development.

Birgitta Böckeler

To pair or not to pair

Birgitta Böckeler, Principal Developer at ThoughtWorks

Pair programming is an agile development practice that is generally well-known of, but still has only patchy adoption across the industry. Birgitta will talk about why that might be, and what challenges she has seen that hold people back to reap the benefits. For those in the audience who are not convinced that it’s useful, or who only use it irregularly, this will hopefully give fresh inspiration to try it, or try it again. And for those who are regular pair programmers or even advocates, this might help you convince others to give pair programming a go.

We’re hiring talented junior, senior and lead devs
