Linear is an issue tracker that pairs the easy setup of Trello with the planning features teams usually turn to Jira for. Many startups have used it in place of Jira for years, and its recent appeal comes from how well it works with coding agents. Agents join a Linear workspace as members, so teams can assign them issues, mention them in comments and see the reasoning behind each change. Cursor, OpenAI Codex and Devin can all take on work this way, while Linear's remote MCP server lets tools such as Claude Code read and update issues. Linear holds the work a team plans and prioritizes. Beads sits a level below it, tracking the smaller tasks agents create as they go. We often use Linear with clients whose teams work heavily with coding agents. Teams that choose their own tooling should consider trialing it if they want agents to pick up work directly from the backlog.
