In a market where technological innovation defines competitiveness, Globo continues to lead by investing in the integration of solutions that drive its development and relevance in the media industry. One of its latest initiatives is a partnership with Thoughtworks, a global technology consultancy, to develop the Product Technology Radar — a strategic guide designed to support Globo in adopting innovative and sustainable technologies across its operations. This guide builds upon Thoughworks’s biannually published Tech Radar report informed by its observations, conversations and frontline experiences solving its clients’ most complex business challenges.
The collaboration between the two companies has a long-standing history, beginning in 2017 and evolving through the development of three versions of the Tech Radar for strategic areas. In 2021, the first Radar was created for the Digital Platforms area, followed in 2023 by a version focused on Data and AI. Now, in 2024, the focus is on the Digital Products area, where Globo aims to establish a comprehensive view of its technological infrastructure and chart a path for the future, solidifying its position as a leader in media innovation.
“Our goal with the Product Technology Radar is to provide Globo with an updated ‘snapshot’ of its technologies and enable informed decision-making based on the expertise of its specialists. It’s a tool that maps and fosters discussions among teams while promoting an integrated view of Globo’s technological potential,” explains André Almeida, Technical Principal at Thoughtworks, who has been working on projects with Globo since the partnership began in 2017.
Impact of the Product Technology Radar
The Product Technology Radar aims to provide a realistic and up-to-date overview of the technologies used by Globo, as well as create a collaborative space for its teams. The initiative stands out for its ability to connect global trends with the specific needs of the media sector. Unlike Thoughtworks' traditional Technology Radar—which focuses on broad market trends—this Radar has been tailored to the challenges and specifics of a media company, ensuring that the technological solutions are viable, secure, and applicable over time.
By participating in this project, Thoughtworks brings its expertise in adaptive frameworks and methodologies, ensuring that the Radar is updated with the most relevant and secure technologies and practices. This gives Globo a strategic advantage, allowing the company to anticipate trends and prepare effectively for future implementations.
Development Process and Internal Collaboration
To develop the Radar, Thoughtworks employed a collaborative methodology, involving professionals from various areas and roles. “We gave each participant significant autonomy to share their experiences and insights about the technologies they use daily,” says André Almeida. The result is a rich document that highlights which technologies should be prioritized, identifies opportunities for improvement, and flags potential risks.
This collaborative construction process is more than just mapping; it’s a strategy involving active discussions and well-informed decision-making. The Radar is considered a dynamic tool, where employees’ insights and feedback help guide the company’s technological future.
Benefits for the Future
The Product Technology Radar offers a range of strategic advantages for Globo. In the short term, it creates a technical space for teams to share experiences and knowledge. This initial phase yields concrete results by enabling teams to internally discuss the categorization of technologies, select the most relevant ones, and, when necessary, debate differing viewpoints. Questions and disagreements are expected and valued, as these debates form the foundation for technological growth.
In the medium term, leadership can establish technical strategies to maximize the use of internal technologies while developing specific actions for those requiring greater attention and improvement.
Additionally, the Radar when applied to Globo’s tech strategy can serve as an important resource for onboarding new professionals, facilitating their understanding of the technologies and methodologies already in use, as well as during recruitment processes. The comprehensive and structured perspective offered by the project also provides a solid foundation for strategic decisions, not only in developing new products but also in enhancing existing technologies.
“The Product Technology Radar is more than a strategic tool; it represents the active collaboration among our teams, built from the bottom up, and Globo’s vision of shaping the future of technology. By connecting global trends to our specific needs, we ensure not only sustainable innovations but also a solid foundation to continue surprising and engaging our users,” says Igor Macaubas, Director of Technology for Digital Products at Globo.
The work carried out by Thoughtworks is an extension of its Technology Radar, a semi-annual report based on the company’s observations, discussions, and experiences in addressing its clients’ most complex challenges which provides practical guidance to organizations such asGlobo on how to outline their objectives and strategies. Recently, the global consultancy released the 31st edition, highlighting tools, platforms, and frameworks for generative AI that are emerging to help developers create solutions more effectively and responsibly. Features like controlling the “context window” or obtaining structured outputs can minimize the known risks of generative AI and enable organizations to harness it successfully.
