James Grate
Global Head of Social ImpactI am a passionate advocate for leveraging technology as a force for good. My core belief is that technologists are inherently problem-solvers, and I strive to cultivate a mindset that incorporates ethical and responsible design, considering the second- and third-order consequences of our work. This approach enables Thoughtworks to build and deliver technology that positively impacts the world.
Since joining Thoughtworks in 2011 as a Business Analyst, I've led teams through complex software and business transformations. This background is foundational to my current role, where I advise teams on integrating people, culture, and social impact imperatives across our operations; influencing how employee experience and how our teams design, build, and deliver software
As Global Head of Social Impact, my role is anchored by four key pillars: fostering a culture of belonging that champions diversity, accessibility, and equitable experiences; enabling sustainable transformation through the application of technology; promoting positive social change by empowering social purpose organizations with tech solutions, and advocating for responsible technology governance.
My experience collaborating with a diverse array of clients and colleagues across several countries — including the US, Canada, Brazil, the UK, Spain, Germany, India, and China — has profoundly reinforced my conviction that diverse teams are essential for creating equitable technological outcomes.
I am a graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. I live in New Jersey with my wife and our young toddler, who love exploring new restaurants and outdoor activities together.
