We are now a member of Business Disability Forum

Business Disability Forum is a not-for-profit membership organisation that makes it easier and more rewarding to do business with and employ disabled people. By providing pragmatic support, sharing expertise, giving advice, providing training and facilitating networking opportunities, they help organisations to be disability smart.

I am absolutely delighted that Thoughtworks has become a member of Business Disability Forum. We want to be fully engaged in the disability space, working towards removing barriers and improving equality for those with different abilities at Thoughtworks. We want to encourage the tech industry to become more inclusive of all society, including those living with disabilities.

Business Disability Forum have more than twenty years’ experience working with public and private sector organisations, and work with Government to shape disability policy including the Disability Discrimination Act (better known as the Equality Act).

Inclusive products and services will give access to almost 14 million disabled people in the UK and 1.3 billion people across the world. We are looking forward to collaborating with Business Disability Forum Technology Taskforce - a group of individuals working together to improve the use of accessible technology - to provide best practice and to influence technology suppliers to deliver inclusive products and services for everyone.

Inclusive tech also allows us to fully engage with our customers accessing the annual £265 billion market which is known as the Purple Pound and is the spending power of disabled households in the UK. The global equivalent – let us call it the ‘Purple Dollar’ – is valued at $8 trillion.

More and more companies are realising that having a variety of people working for them, with different opinions and backgrounds, is a key contributor to their success. Thoughtworks have always aimed to be inclusive of everyone, however we know that we have a way to go on this if we are to be representative of the communities that we serve.  Our work with Business Disability Forum will allow us to work with the experts to enable real, positive changes for our colleagues and clients alike. Our internal group of Thoughtworkers will also enable us to understand this from a Thoughtworker and Client perspective.
