Nate Schutta

Software Architect

I'm a software architect, Java Champion and polyglot programming proponent focused on cloud computing and developer happiness.

As well as working as a Software Architect at Thoughtworks, I'm also an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota, where I teach students to both embrace and evaluate technical change.

I've appeared on a number of podcasts, presented at conferences around the world and published multiple books, including Presentation Patterns (with Neal Ford and Matthew McCullough), Thinking Architecturally and Responsible Microservices. My latest book, written with Dan Vega and published by O'Reilly in November 2025, is Fundamentals of Software Engineering.
