Thoughtworks at Web Summit: Responsible Tech and Innovation

Thoughtworks (Nasdaq: TWKS), a global technology consultancy that integrates strategy, design and engineering to drive digital innovation, today announced at Web Summit 2021 a number of innovation announcements, including the launch of our Responsible Tech Playbook to help technologists address the societal implications of their choices by providing practical methods for responsible and ethical tech. Dr. Rebecca Parsons, chief technology officer at Thoughtworks is delivering a keynote at Web Summit’s SaaS Monster track entitled “Privacy, equity, inclusion: The intricate world of responsible tech” on Nov. 3.

“Thoughtworks is committed to amplifying positive social change and creating extraordinary impact in everything we do for our clients, each other and society. Our commitment is demonstrated in the conversations we drive and convene around privacy, equity, and inclusion at leading industry events such as Web Summit and with partners such as the Mozilla Foundation,” said Dr. Rebecca Parsons, chief technology officer, Thoughtworks. “We are excited to share how we’re continuing to proactively work around the world to identify, understand and address inequities in emerging technology.”

Here are a few key examples:

Commitment to tech for good

In its shared commitment with the Mozilla Foundation to create and promote trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) projects, Thoughtworks is the project leader of a MozFest working group established in September 2021 focused on designing and performing a technical audit of the AI and algorithms used by well known consumer delivery services in Ecuador to improve labor rights defense activities. With the help of several Ecuadorian community organizations, once completed the audit is expected to support labor movements in Ecuador. Longer term, the working group aims to consider how this approach might be replicated in other countries.

Client sustainability journeys

In addition to actively working to reduce our own carbon footprint, Thoughtworks also leverages technology to identify and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change from the industry and its clients. On Earth Day (April 22, 2021), Thoughtworks and a small cohort of innovation partners launched an open source solution, Cloud Carbon Footprint, which provides organizations with visibility and tooling to measure, monitor and reduce their cloud carbon emissions. Clients are already using Cloud Carbon Footprint to create a dashboard of estimated energy usage and carbon emissions as well as metrics to be shared with employees, investors and other stakeholders.
