Thoughtworks Expands in Newcastle with 80 New Roles and Larger State-of-the-Art Office

Thoughtworks Expands in Newcastle with 80 New Roles and Larger State-of-the-Art Office

A year after the announcement of a new Newcastle office, global tech consultancy Thoughtworks today reveals it will be recruiting for an additional 80 jobs, while at the same time, moving into a new place of work to accommodate its growing staff numbers.

The roles range from senior to junior positions, including places on the company’s entry-level program, Thoughtworks University – a year long immersive program that trains new recruits in technical and consulting skills. Underpinning the vacancies is a recruitment scheme aimed at people from all backgrounds and walks of life – from graduates and career changers to those simply with a passion for technology.

The new state of the art office based in Newcastle designed by local firm, Aptus, has a focus on flexible working, in order to accommodate the new swing to hybrid working that has taken place since the pandemic.

The office will feature flexible meeting areas to host large scale functions and workshops online, in-person or a mixture of the two; a range of different creative and collaborative areas for smaller groups; and quiet pods for those needing to work independently. Each area will have the latest technology to enable remote and off-site connectivity.

At a time when Thoughtworks’ own research has shown the North East to be amongst the regions who place greatest value on wellbeing in their organization, the new office will feature various social and entertainment spaces, as well as comfortable areas for Thoughtworkers to relax and unwind. Continuing the company’s focus on inclusion and diversity, the office will be designed to be accessible for all.

Matt Simons, Market Director at Thoughtworks comments: “As Newcastle continues its rise as a leading UK tech hub, Thoughtworks is committed to establishing a presence in the North East, and will look to make a tangible contribution to the region’s growth. We are keen to further expand and invest in the area and cement its status as a tech hub of the UK.

Patrick B. Sarnacke, Managing Director, Thoughtworks UK added: “Our mission at Thoughtworks is to create an extraordinary impact on the world through culture and tech excellence, but we also feel passionate about creating a work environment that is safe, allows for flexibility and fosters collaboration and innovation. Our new hybrid office set up is an opportunity to build an even more interactive and sustainable culture, combining the flexibility, inclusivity and sustainability of remote whilst maintaining the energy and connectedness of meeting colleagues face-to-face.”

Elected Metro Mayor for North of Tyne, Jamie Driscoll, said: “Thoughtworks get it. The North East is fast becoming a go-to location for tech companies. It's excellent news that they’re creating dozens more local jobs, at all levels. This is as much about changing individual lives as it is about boosting the sector and transforming our region. Bravo, Thoughtworks.”

Dawn Dunn, Senior Investment Manager, NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI), said: “I’m incredibly excited about today’s announcement and Thoughtworks’ commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for people at all levels - from entry-level to senior positions.

“This new base positions Thoughtworks as an integral part of Newcastle’s burgeoning tech cluster and the University programme aligns with the city’s dedication to creating jobs and opportunities for all, creating a real career pipeline for graduates and young people at a globally recognized tech company.”

Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet Member for a Resilient City, Cllr Alex Hay, said: “I’d like to welcome Thoughtworks to Newcastle. Their decision to invest here is yet another vote of confidence in our city as an emerging tech hub in the UK.

“The entry level jobs are particularly pleasing as this will give residents the opportunity to start their careers and build their future in a growing city which offers a great quality of life.

“I look forward to the opening of their office and wish them every success in the future.”
