Assess ?

Swamp is an automation tool built to be used by AI coding agents. When an agent carries out an operational task directly, it may do it differently each time and leave little record of what it did. With Swamp, the agent writes the automation instead, as TypeScript models of external systems and YAML workflows that chain the models' methods together. The workflows follow the same defined process every time, their definitions live in a Git repository and the output from each run is kept as versioned data the agent can query later. Credentials are injected from a vault at runtime, so they stay out of prompts. Models can also be packaged as extensions and shared through a registry. An agent instructed to write and commit scripts without Swamp can produce something similar, but without built-in typed interfaces, run history or reusable modules.

Swamp replaces System Initiative, which we featured in Assess in a previous volume. Swamp grew out of infrastructure management but is aimed at operational workflows more broadly, from incident response to data pipelines. The source is open under AGPLv3, although the official distribution uses a commercial license that requires a subscription for use at work. The project is new and moves fast, with a fresh release for every commit, so teams should try it on low-risk internal automation before depending on it.
