Apple container is an open-source tool for running Linux containers natively on Apple silicon. Written in Swift, it uses Apple’s Containerization package to run a lightweight VM for each container rather than a monolithic Linux VM. This architecture provides hypervisor-level isolation and dynamic memory allocation, returning RAM to macOS when a container is torn down. It offers a native, lightweight alternative to shared-VM managers such as Colima and avoids the licensing requirements associated with Docker Desktop. When paired with community bridges such as Socktainer for Docker API compatibility, Apple container is particularly effective for local Testcontainers setups that require fast cold starts and strict resource boundaries. The project also includes Container Machine for running persistent, host-integrated Linux environments.
