31 October 2014
It’s 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, one day before Halloween. I was Barting to the office when one idea occurred to me: why don’t we get a costume for our product, Mingle? We could change the color everywhere – every button and link – to the Halloween theme.
Immediately, I started laughing at myself. Really? You want to change the entire skin of your product just for fun? Maybe some of your over 60,000 users will smile when they login in, but look at the backlog of your team. Is this a priority?
DON’T BE SILLY.
One minute later, I found myself sending out an email to our team:
“How about one day orange for fun?”
At 10:00 a.m. I was at our team standup meeting. We looked at each other, not sure how much work was needed for the theme change, and wondered whether we could catch today’s train for deployment. Then I heard our product manager Ethan saying:
“Let’s try it out. Show people Mingle’s personality and have fun!”
10 minutes later, Elly, our awesome designer, showed me a cute hand-drawn bat on top of the Mingle logo. I loved it!
30 minutes later, Kiera, one of our talented developers, showed me an orange Mingle in the development environment.
Later I spent some time in the kitchen. When I came back, I was told the change went through our build and was ready to be deployed in the production environment. We just needed to click the button at the end of the day.
It’s 8:00 p.m. of my day. I am back at home. I open my browser and login to Mingle.
This is one of those moments when I realize how wonderful working on this team.
Happy Halloween, from the Mingle team.
*Mingle orange is back from the dead!: Mingle used to be orange, but in March of this year we crowdsourced our new color, and changed it to blue.
