Karl Stoney

Technical Lead

12 years or so experience in application development and architecture, with a keen interest in security (fuelled from my days as an EA at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Security Services).

These days, I'm a bit of a DevOps fanatic as I thoroughly enjoy helping and enabling others, taking them on the same journey I have been on for the past few years.  I try to write about it as I go on my blog.

I also spend a disproportionate amount of my time contributing back to the open source community that has given us all so much!  Currently getting my teeth stuck into Hawkeye, among others!

The Interview

I came to find ThoughtWorks by

Due to my involvement in the tech community, I was well aware of ThoughtWorks but personally never thought to apply.  This was actually imposter syndrome, and one day I was approached by a ThoughtWorks recruiter because of some of the open source work I do.  I decided to "take a gamble" and see what happened.  It turned out not to be so much of a gamble after all, and I ended up working with the most incredible people.

My geeky passion is

Counter-Strike.  In my spare time some years ago, I built CSGN which at the time, was the largest counter-strike league in the UK run by 30+ volunteers.

The best advice I can give a current or future ThoughtWorker is

Don't expect ThoughtWorks, or ThoughtWorkers to be anything like you've experienced before.  Trust in the support of those around you, feel safe in taking risks, and grow - knowing that we've got each others backs.

The thing I love most about my work is

The people I work with, no hesitation, I've learned more from those around me in the last two years, than the previous 5!

With ThoughtWorks, I've visited

San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Brazil, Colorado, London, India, Copenhagen, Budapest.
