Jeff Gray

Managing Director, North America
I lead ThoughtWorks North America, where we focus on changing the competitive position of our clients through disruptive technology.  Every company in every industry is becoming a software company, and we design and build custom software with some of the world's best, big and small.
My job is to set our vision, make sure our amazing people have the context and information to do great work, and ensure the chemistry experiment that is our culture keeps bubbling in interesting directions.  If we do that right, we'll have a strong and growing company, a true platform for impact on our customers, our industry, and society.

The Interview

The thing I'm most proud of from my time here is

Growing the San Francisco office into a strong and vibrant community.  It's amazing to see the awesome people, ambitious work, and continuous stream of ideas there today, and I'm proud to have built part of the foundation.

The thing I love most about my work is

There's a moment I love when working with a new customer.  It's maybe the third or fourth meeting; we know them a bit and they know us, but we haven't yet started working for them.  I often end up at the whiteboard sketching out a solution to one of their problems, or an approach to seizing an opportunity.  To do it well draws on all of my creativity and experience, and it's fun and intellectually stimulating.  And even better is seeing the idea (or whatever it evolved into) live, and creating value for the customer, down the road.

The best advice I can give a current or future ThoughtWorker is

I always say to new ThoughtWorkers:  if you're here long enough you'll get asked to do something unexpected.  It could be a new technology, a new role, a new country, or something you never thought you could do.  My advice is to, at least a few times, say yes.  It's part of the magic of this place.
