Frequently Asked Questions

How is the development journey? How can I grow in ThoughtWorks?

ThoughtWorks has its own development model, which allows you to know clearly what are the technical aspects to work on at the beginning, and later, to design the career development with freedom, based on your own interests, with the support of tools and our global community.

So, for example: you will be able to deepen your knowledge of your current role, be active in designing your career development without sticking to a single role, lead teams, exercise technical leadership, or venture into new roles according to your motivations and how they fit with the development of our business itself. ThoughtWorks actively cares and invests in the growth of people so they can go further, because of this we are recognized for our technical excellence.

Will I be able to practice and improve my English?

At ThoughtWorks, English is part of the day-to-day business as we are a global community operating in 14 countries, and some projects involve distributed teams. If it is not your strong point yet, you will have the possibility to improve it, if you participate in instances of global communication in English, if you are active in a global community, if you are part of a distributed team. Or study it, if you participate in the English classes we offer as a benefit. You can also learn from global meetings and participations where you can practice the language.

What happens when a project ends?

ThoughtWorks is intentional on people growing and joining us during our challenges. When an assignment ends, you will move on to a new team based on business needs and interests. It may also be the case that you can participate in an internal initiative or dedicate yourself to your technical goals associated with your personal growth while the new challenge arrives.

What is the difference between ThoughtWorks and other consulting companies?

People are the essence of ThoughtWorks and not an extension or small part of it. You have a career plan with freedom to choose your path. Your contract is not tied to just one project. You will work in teams of technical excellence, globally distributed teams, and challenging projects. You will participate in events relevant to the technology community. You will also be able to participate in initiatives where we take advantage of technology to help minority groups or have a positive impact on society. You will work in a diverse and multicultural environment.

What technologies do you use in ThoughtWorks?

The technologies we use depend very much on the client and the type of problem we are solving. It is common to have projects with backend in Java or Node.js and frontend in React, but we also work currently (or in recent projects) with .NET Core, React Native, Kotlin, Swift and Python. For general infrastructure we use Terraform. We don't hire developers with a specific technology in mind, although due to a staffing situation in projects we sometimes have to recruit more intentionally for one tech stack or another, in general we expect developers to have the flexibility to work with different technologies in ThoughtWorks. We believe that the choice of a good developer is not directly linked to their experience with a specific tech stack.

How can I stay up-to-date with the technologies inside ThoughtWorks?

When a new ThoughtWorker joins the company, we have an initial onboarding process to align expectations about the work and the way we develop software. It is common for people to go through a "deconstruction" process, where they seek to align previous experience with existing ThoughtWorks practices. This process is often already an intense learning period. Furthermore, as part of our technology strategy we seek specialization in 4 areas (which we call Service Lines): "Enterprise Modernization, Platforms and Cloud", "Digital Transformation and Operations", "Data Strategy, Engineering and Analytics" and "Customer Experience, Product and Design". Independently of the Service Lines, all the people have support for their career plan and we provide different update options: participation in conferences and diverse remote learning providers (Linux Academy, Pluralsight, Coursera, Data Camp and Safari Books). In addition, we have an active community that always shares technical subjects internally and with the external community. Finally, people have mentors, coaches or sponsors, who can more intentionally support each other's journeys.
