ThoughtWorks Webinar | Succeeding with Offshore Product Development

Practices of high performing teams

Few, if any, successful software-based products miraculously emerge from an initial design followed by 'heads-down' development. Rather, most successful software products evolve via collaboration amongst many stakeholders and responsiveness to frequent feedback and changing market conditions. This webinar explored how the principles and practices of agile and lean development have been applied by globally distributed teams to enable the collaboration and responsiveness required for successful software product development.

In an earlier webinar on 'Succeeding with Offshore Product Development: Practical advice for getting started' we focused on Inception, that part of the product development life cycle when product vision and priorities are established. In this subsequent webinar, we focused on the iterative-incremental development that follows. In particular, we addressed the cultural, communication and logistical challenges that are exacerbated by globally distributed teams. We not only showed how these can be overcome, but how the result can be a process that is superior to that achieved by many co-located teams.

Practical advice for getting started

Offshore development is now commonplace for just about everything from legacy maintenance to enterprise application development. One area where the notion of offshore continues to encounter resistance is product development, as many product managers consider it too risky to develop the "crown jewels" of their organizations in locations that are far removed in terms of both distance and time zones.
