National Broadband Network

Bringing high-speed broadband to all Australians

Near the end of 2010, the Australian government mandated that National Broadband Company (NBN Co) offer an option for residential developers to log fiber installation requests online. NBN Co would have to capture new requests and route them to internal systems as if they had come in via the call center.

With the customer and provisioning information necessary to get fiber orders started, this was not an easy task, but a six-week deadline to get it in place by the start of the next year was an even greater challenge. ThoughtWorks deployed a mixed local and Agile team of Ruby on Rails developers, business analysts, and user experience designers to help NBN Co design, build, test and deploy the new integrated online portal in just six weeks.

ThoughtWorks went further, helping NBN Co with tools to automate testing and deployments and implementation of feature branching to attain a near-continuous delivery capability and higher quality software. A second release took advantage of data from early usage patterns to update the user interface, resulting in customer praise to NBN Co account managers along with operational cost savings.

NBN Co’s IT team now has not only the mandated online customer portal, but also a continuous delivery capability and new user experience design practices that will be put to use on other projects. ThoughtWorks’ Agile team gave NBN Co the ability to quickly deploy the solution and add skilled developers – this was crucial to hitting the regulatory deadline.
